Project Make A Friend

by Armine Hakopyan on October 27, 2019

“Why?’ It’s the ultimate question.

Why does the planet Earth exist? Why are we, humans, here? Why do socks get lost in the laundry? Why should I learn stuff? Why should I learn Armenian? Ok, so this post is about the last question and it might not be for everyone, but if it is a question your child asks you, let me introduce you to a fun and simple project Armenian Kids Club has begun to help answer that question.

Project Make A Friend, is what we are calling it. Simple and sweet, it is a Pen Pal program between Armenian children from all around the world.

The purpose of the project is:

  1. To allow children, who have been learning Armenian to use their knowledge of the language in a practical and fun way. When we use what we learn right away and as part of our daily life, that knowledge becomes engrained more deeply in our brain. Through this project, students are using Armenian to make a friend by writing to them. They don’t realize they are learning because making a friend is rewarding and fun. Subconsciously, they will see that learning Armenian was valuable and practical. It helped them communicate with a new friend.armenian girl
  2. To connect Armenian children to their history and culture. To say that the history of the Armenians is long is an understatement. Throughout the millennia, Armenians have traveled and settled into every corner of the world. Miraculously, we have been able to maintain our identity and preserve our language even as we assimilated into the host countries that we called our new home. Why do we hold on to our ancient language? Why do we build schools, cultural centers, and communities to remind us of where we came from? Perhaps, it is the fierce connection we have to our history and homeland. Through this project, we hope to create more of these unbreakable connections to our beautiful and rich heritage.armenian school
  3. To connect Armenian children from all over the world and build friendships. It is very common for most Armenians to be bilingual or trilingual. We live all over the world and pride ourselves in learning the culture and language of the country we live in. Through this project, we will connect children from all over the world, who may speak a language other than Armenian. They will realize that the only language that they have in common is Armenian. A simple letter to a friend may lead to the awareness that our language is precious and important because it is what connects us and help foster a friendship that no distance can ever fracture.armenians around the world
