Celebrating Hovhannes Tumanyan

by Armine Hakopyan on March 13, 2018

On February 24, 2018 Armenian Kids Club and Sardarabad Bookstore joined together to celebrate the life and works of beloved Hovhannes Tumanyan. Our newly published books, “Tumanyan’s Biography”, which was written for young readers and “Oolik” written by Hovhannes Tumanyan, were presented.

Forty children with their parents filled the bookstore to the brim. As each child walked in, they were given a bow-tie similar to the one that Tumanyan wore, to color and decorate and "wear". The excited voices were hushed and we began story time. Kids followed the story of “Oolik”,  their eyes bright with curiosity. Using over-sized book pages and finger puppets, children learned of the dangers of opening the door to strangers.

Following story time, children were given a chance to create their own puppets. Some created Oolik, while others created the mother goat or the hungry wolf. No Oolik was eaten during this process.

As children created and played, a segment of “Anush Opera” was played in the background by the pianist, putting the final touches to a memorable afternoon.

Children left with gifts provided by Sardarabad bookstore, the masks they created and the impression that Tumanyan was a really awesome guy. We left with our hearts filled and Tumanyan’s name in our minds.
